Background
Jubail Industrial City has become home to the world’s largest integrated smart irrigation network, which cuts costs, protects the environment, and is designed to conserve resources according to the Saudi Press Agency. The network is operated by the Royal Commission Jubail and Yanbu (RCJY) via a centralized control center, which manages over 12,200 smart devices. These are devices that read and control approximately 1.2 million signals on a daily basis and make sure that the city uses water effectively.
Safar Alnutayfat, the operation and maintenance manager incorporated at RCJY, indicated that the project is considered a national example of sustainable development. The system complies with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 through the development of digitalization of resource management and the enhancement of smart cities with a high efficiency level.
The intelligent irrigation network extends across a vast number of pipelines, amounting to 11,600 kilometers. RCJY has saved a percental increase of more than 35 per cent by way of operational and maintenance costs utilising modern technologies. On the same note, about 2.8 million cubic water is recycled by the commission to utilize in irrigating crops per month.
Officials say the initiative supports both the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative, which focus on expanding vegetation, improving air quality, and fighting climate change. By rationalizing the use of natural resources, the Jubail system also helps increase green cover in the industrial city while minimizing environmental impact.
Jubail Industrial City has one of the largest industrial complexes in the world, and this irrigation system further contributes to its leadership in terms of sustainable urban management. It is hoped the project can act as a blueprint to other cities within the Kingdom and the wider region as they implement smart environmental solutions.
