Key Background
Saudi Arabia scored tremendous diplomatic triumph when the United Nations Human Rights Council passed unanimously its resolution to strengthen international action to safeguard children in cyberspace. The resolution, tabled during the 59th session of the Council, is the culmination of the Kingdom’s overall “Child Protection in Cyberspace” program initiated in October 2024 under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The resolution, introduced by nations such as Kuwait, Algeria, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, and Vietnam, recognizes the potential and risk to children in today’s world of the Internet. The resolution calls on member states to make national laws more robust, increase international cooperation, and invest in information, awareness, and technical capacity to safeguard children from harm in the Internet. The proposal’s comprehensive approach underlines the importance of customized national initiatives of common knowledge and resources.
Saudi Arabia’s UN Permanent Representative in Geneva, Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila, reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s dedication to worldwide child welfare. The resolution is sympathetic to the Kingdom’s initiative of digital human rights and inclusive global digital development.
During a weekly Cabinet session, Saudi ministers were awarded the global accolade as appreciation for the Kingdom’s leadership in the digital era. The Cabinet drew attention to the recent listing of the country as the top country in cybersecurity and ICT development indexes for 2025, ranking it among world leaders in determining global tech policy. Such events have led to the growth in the magnitude of Saudi Arabia’s digital economy to over SR 495 billion, complementing Vision 2030 goals of digital transformation.
The Cabinet also reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s ongoing economic diplomacy, such as its OPEC+ initiative leadership and strategic negotiations with global partners like Germany and Indonesia. These events represent the Kingdom’s rising status on both technology and geopolitical levels.
