Background

The United Arab Emirates has introduced the big move to influence the future of telecommunications in the world by introducing its National 6G Initiative. The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) announced the move at the first meeting of the 6G Committee, which is formed of representatives of government departments, telecom companies, universities, and research centers.

The project will transform the UAE into a leader in 6G technologies, based on the success of 5G in the country. The current 5G serves a population of over 10 million individuals across the 99.5 percent of the population in the UAE and has over 23,000 network sites.

Through the 6G Initiative, the UAE plans to move into the post-5G era by using artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and satellite networks to power future services such as smart cities, advanced healthcare, and automated transport.

The 6G Committee will develop a strong national system to support next-generation connectivity. Its main goals include encouraging cooperation among national partners, promoting research and innovation, and helping to shape international 6G standards. It will also work on creating new rules and an effective plan to manage spectrum use for future networks.

To achieve these goals, two working groups have been formed. The Research and Development Working Group, led by Dr. Marwan Dabbah from Khalifa University, will focus on innovation and new technologies. The Integration and Strategic Partnerships Working Group, headed by Dr. Khaled Al Awadhi from TDRA, will build partnerships with national and global organizations.

With this initiative, the UAE aims to stay ahead in digital progress and prepare for a new era of ultra-fast, intelligent connectivity.
