Background

Through a joint venture with Heavy Engineering Industries and Shipbuilding Company (Heisco), VA Tech Wabag has successfully bagged a contract worth $372 million for the design, fabrication, and operation of a seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant in Kuwait.

The contract for the Doha SWRO Desalination Plant (Recarbonation System), Stage II has been granted to VA Tech Wabag by the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy of Kuwait after being approved by the Central Agency for Public Tenders.

The contract will include design, engineering, procurement, fabrication, construction, and commissioning of a 60 million imperial gallons per day desalination plant equipped with a Recarbonation System, which will be able to provide drinking water to cater to Kuwait’s increasing demand for water and ensure its water security in the future.

It is for the first time that VA Tech Wabag will implement any project in Kuwait and thereby expand its operations in the GCC region desalination market.

To help realize the goals of sustainability, the facility will feature photovoltaic technology that will help provide some of the energy needs of the plant. This helps achieve Kuwait’s goal of harnessing renewable sources of energy while also ensuring a decrease in the carbon footprint of the facility.

The total value of the contract comes to KD 114.3 million, which was won after a tender process conducted by Kuwait’s Central Agency for Public Tenders. It is estimated that construction can be completed within a period of three months from when the process begins.
