The United Arab Emirates has announced a $1 billion initiative to support digital development in African countries.

The initiative was unveiled at the G20 Summit by H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, who said the UAE aims to promote economic and social progress through innovation, strong partnerships and modern financing approaches.

The programme will help African countries improve digital services and key sectors, supporting growth and development.

The initiative will be implemented by the Abu Dhabi Exports Office (ADEX), part of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, in partnership with the UAE Foreign Aid Agency. The partnership aims to ensure effective financing and delivery of high-impact projects that leverage advanced technologies for long-term development outcomes.

Speaking on the initiative, Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and Chairman of ADEX’s Exports Executive Committee, said the programme reflects the UAE’s belief in artificial intelligence as a powerful driver of inclusive and sustainable growth. He noted that combining technology, financing and international cooperation would help developing countries build stronger, more resilient economies.

The initiative also seeks to empower UAE-based companies to participate in innovative development projects across Africa, strengthening economic and technological ties while contributing to global sustainable development goals.

Meanwhile, Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri said the UAE continues to support humanitarian and development work by using modern technology to improve education, healthcare and infrastructure.

The initiative is part of the UAE’s long-term support for Africa. Since 1971, the UAE has given more than AED 152 billion in aid to help improve living standards.

It also strengthens the UAE’s role as a global centre for technology and innovation, while supporting sustainable economic growth.
